HERO Theatre presents classical plays and new plays inspired by the classics, re-imagining great works for modern audiences. We feature an ensemble of actors representing the ethnic and economic diversity in America.
The inspiration for HERO Theatre began in the wings of the Roundabout Theatre Company's Laura Pels Theatre during a production of "The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore", starring Olympia Dukakis. Ms. Dukakis co-founded the Whole Theater Company where she served as Producing Artistic Director and knew the importance of artists creating companies. After many conversations backstage, Dukakis turned to her co-star Elisa Bocanegra and said "I think it's time for you to start a theater company and help others like you." Those words of wisdom inspired the beginning of HERO Theatre. On August 8 2011, HERO launched with a benefit reading of Chekhov's "Three Sisters" directed by Obie-award winner Lisa Peterson. Olympia Dukakis hosted the event.
